Introduction
Welcome to Men’s Ministry in
the 21st Century: The Encyclopedia of Practical Ideas.
Hmm…men’s ministry. Interestingly, when it comes to most of the groups in your
church--children, youth, singles, women, senior adults--you could start or grow
a ministry by going wild with fun new activities and events. But when it comes
to ministering to and with the men in your church, things are a little
different.
Why?
Well, guys tend to be different. For example, when it comes to their
relationships with other guys at church, they often don’t go much deeper than a
handshake or a slap on the back and some superficial shooting of the breeze in
the foyer on Sunday mornings.
That’s fine. Until trouble strikes a man and his family. Then, because he hasn’t
formed any decent relationships with other guys, he doesn’t have a friend to
turn to when he’s dealing with the consequences of a bad choice, going through
trouble with his teenager, dealing with the death of a parent, or facing any
other problem that just comes with life.
So that’s the underlying theme of this book. Yes, it’s chock-full of tools,
activities, events, and nuts and bolts about how you can start and build a
ministry to and with men in your church. Some of these things are hard work,
others are just fun. Some are meaningful and inspirational, others are merely
practical and functional. Some are intensely spiritual and life-transforming,
others are simply ideas to help men test the waters of getting involved.
To provide all of that, we’ve pulled together some of the best guys we could
find. But all of our contributors--many who’ve been involved in men’s ministry
for years--realize that without drawing men in and connecting all the
tools, activities, events, and nuts and bolts to the purpose of helping guys
form and deepen relationships with each other and with God, the resulting
ministry will be empty.
God passionately loves men. He desires that men keenly love him. God wants to
use men. He wants men to serve him, their wives, their families, and others in
significant and meaningful ways.
Our prayer as you use this book is that--beyond your wildest expectations--God
will bless you, the guys in your church, those you reach out to beyond the walls
of your church, and the lives that together you’ll change for eternity.
